Start EnterpriseThe Business Model Canvas is a one-page strategic framework that maps how a business creates, delivers and captures value. It was developed by Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur and has become one of the most widely used business tools in the world. You'll hear it called the BMC model, the BMC canvas, the business canvas model or simply the canvas. They all refer to the same thing.
The business model canvas definition, at its core, is simple: nine interconnected blocks that together describe how your business works. Fill them in and you get a complete picture of your model on a single page. That's what makes it so useful in workshops, strategy sessions and client conversations.
Today most people build their canvas online. An online business model canvas is easier to share, faster to update and simpler to collaborate on than a sticky-note version on a wall.
Each block covers a different dimension of your business. Together they show the full picture.
Key Partners are the external suppliers and collaborators your business model depends on. The key partners definition in the BMC covers any person, organisation or company you rely on to make your model work but don't employ directly. Key partnerships typically fall into four types: strategic alliances between non-competitors, coopetition between rivals on shared goals, joint ventures and buyer-supplier relationships. Only list partners your model genuinely cannot function without.
Key Activities are the things your business must actually do to deliver its Value Proposition. Business model key activities fall into production work, problem-solving work and platform or network work. A SaaS company codes and maintains its product. A consultancy runs workshops and writes strategy. Focus on the two or four things your business cannot stop doing.
Key Resources are the physical, intellectual, human or financial assets your model needs to operate.
The Value Proposition is the specific problem you solve and the reason customers choose you over anyone else.
Customer Relationships describe how you interact with each customer segment, whether that's self-service, personal assistance or something in between.
Channels are how you reach your customers and deliver your value to them, from marketing to delivery.
Customer Segments are the distinct groups of people or organisations your business serves.
Cost Structure covers the main costs your model incurs to operate and deliver value.
Revenue Streams are the ways your business earns money from each customer segment.
mybmctool is a free business model canvas tool that runs entirely in your browser. No spreadsheet, no PowerPoint template, no download. Fill in the nine blocks, add color labels and share the result with a link. It takes minutes to get a canvas in front of a client.
We built it for consultants and founders who run a lot of sessions and need something that just works. The free plan gives you three canvases. Pro and Team plans add the AI features: paste a website link and the AI maps it across all nine blocks, or upload a photo of a whiteboard and get an editable version straight away.
